Two developers
have big plans for Donner Summit. In the forest outside Soda Springs,
on the lands of the Royal Gorge Cross-Country Ski Resort, they envision
950 homes in four themed "camps", with fitness centers, swimming
pools, lodges, retail & commercial space, a mountain-top restaurant,
and a ski slope.
In their
quest for water for this new town, they intend to dredge and/or raise
the dam at Serene Lakes, redam Van Norden meadow, and carve two reservoirs.
Countless species of wildlife will be displaced as two large meadows are
flooded, area river and stream flow is altered, and trees are cleared
for this condo village. We who love this area know the delicacy of this
environment, the harshness of the winters, the preciousness of water,
and the need to preserve what remains of our natural Sierras. Lake Tahoe
is plagued by problems caused by unchecked development. We are determined
to keep the same from happening to Donner Summit.
